The Do’s and Don’ts of Roof Replacement

When a roof replacement is needed for your home, it’s important to spend time researching the aspects of the project from the materials to use, to color to the contractor doing the work.

When it comes to the materials for your roof replacement, make sure you choose the material that is the best option for your region/weather and budget. You can’t always have to go with the same materials that you are replacing.

You do however, want to pick out the material you like because a roof can last 20 plus years. Find a color and style option that you like and can live with for years to come and that follow the rules of your HOA (if you have one).

Make sure when your contractor provides you with an estimate, that it has all the materials, time and labor listed in detail. You want to make sure that what you want from materials to color is correct. Ask for a start and end date, as well. You want to make sure you have everything in writing.

Don’t allow a contractor to talk you into taking shortcuts. Don’t try and save time or money on installation of shingles, flashing or sealants. It will just harm you down the road and cost you more if you have to replace everything again.

Double check and make sure that your roofing contractor is following all safety rules and regulations and that their licenses and insurance policy has them (and you) covered.

It’s ok to confirm what you are paying for from the materials to the contractor. This will only save you down the road.
