Spring Cleaning and Your Roof

We’ve all heard about Spring cleaning and how beneficial it is for you and your house. But have you thought about Spring cleaning for your roof? Cleaning and maintaining your roof are imperative for the lifespan of your roof. Preventative maintenance on your roof can save you thousands of dollars in roof repairs in the long run.

A few steps to help you get started include:

  • Clean off the debris from the top of your roof. This includes leaves, branches, twigs, and any other random objects that blew in during the seasons.
  • If you have trees that grow close to the house and the branches touch the roof or siding or windows, cut them back as tree branches damage a house when they scrape up against it.
  • Clean out the gutters. Pull out leftover leaves and debris with your hands until the water can flow freely.
  • While on your roof, check for mold. If you see any remove it. You can easily remove it with water and bleach. After an hour or so, rinse with water; but we do not recommend a power washer and it is harmful to the granules on your shingles; a regular garden hose will work just fine.
  • Check for any loose or damaged shingles. Also check the flashing and chimney areas. If anything looks damaged, repair or replace it.
  • Don’t forget to check inside the attic. Look for musty odors, water stains or bulging patches on interior walls. If you see any signs of water, you’ll want to get it fixed right away.
