It May Be Hot Now, But the Cold is Coming – How to Prepare

While the weather seems nice and hot now; we all know that in the Midwest, it can change quickly. It’s time to start thinking about how to prepare your home for cold weather. Preparing your home for winter weather is essential to protect your home from winter weather damage and the repairs that come with it.

There are a number of simple steps that you can take to prepare your home for cold weather.

  • Clean your gutters! As snow and ice melts and refreezes, it will need a place to go. By making sure your gutters are clean, the water can safely be pulled away from your home. If the water is left to freeze, an ice dam could form cause water to leak into your home.
  • Recaulk your windows and doors. You should only caulk the outside perimeter of your windows and doors molding using exterior silicone caulk.
  • Get your roof inspected. With winter storms and heavy rain, hail and snow; bad weather wreaks havoc on your roof, so make sure it’s in the best shape possible before the winter weather arrives. Replacing shingles or loose flashing now, can save you from spending major dollars later.
  • Cut back tree branches. Mature trees with limbs hanging over your roof can easily become weighted with snow and fall on your room, causing major damage. Best to cut the limbs back now, before the weather turns cold.

Taking the time to prepare for cold weather now, can save you money down the road. Once you’ve prepared for the colder weather, the better you’ll feel.
