The Invention of Roofing

People have always needed a way to protect themselves from the elements, roofing has existed in one form or another. The materials that people have used over the years have changed drastically.

The first roofing material was animal skins or hides. Then came reeds and mud, followed by bricks, stones, thatch or clay.

To say that one-person invented roofing would be a misconception. Roofing or a way to protect oneself from the elements has always existed. But we do know that one-person invented the asphalt roof and that was Henry Reynolds.

The asphalt roof was invented in 1901 and grew in popularity due to the excellent durability, performance and recyclability. During the early days the shingles were essentially cut strips from a roll of asphalt roofing material.

Eventually the manufacturers of the rolls of asphalt began cutting them into more manageable sections, similar to the square sections we see today.
