A roof leak can be one of the most stressful situations a homeowner can face. If the roof leak is one that you can see from the inside of your home, on the ceiling, you know it’s more serious.
The first thing you want to do is contain the leak so the water doesn’t go all over your home. Place a bucket or some other kind of container under it contain the water. If you have access to the attic, try and find the leak there and place a bucket under it to contain the water.
Try and find the roof leak itself. Remember the leak may not always be where the water is coming through. Most roof leaks are within a foot of where the water is coming in.
Be sure to take pictures of the internal damage. If you need to file an insurance claim you’ll have documentation of the damage.
Now that you’ve got the water contained and you know the approximate location of the leak. Call a professional roofing company to do an inspection and/or repair.
Go over the roof repair and estimate with your roofing professional. From the estimate you’ll be able to identify what repairs needed and the estimate of cost to fix it. And you’ll have enough information to determine if you need to file an insurance claim or not.
Remember that small problems can lead to big problems if not repaired right away.
