There are many ways a roof can show signs of leaking. The most obvious is when you see water spots on your ceiling, but there are a few others that you may experience. Down Under Roofing provides FREE roof inspections with trained inspectors that know exactly what to look for. After a storm, it’s best to get your roof checked before you start noticing the damage. A FREE roof inspection is a great way to ensure peace of mind.
These are the top 5 signs of a roof leak:
- Missing shingles.
- Damaged or cracked shingles.
- Damaged or missing flashing or boot covers to roof penetrations.
- Water spots or wet roof decking (seen in your attic).
- Water spots on your ceilings or walls.
What can cause a roof leak? Once water gets into the attic, it can travel along rafters and other horizontal surfaces which will make it difficult to pinpoint the exact entry point.
Missing Flashing – The first thing you might assume is that it is your shingles fault, but you could be missing the flashing around the chimney, or another area that is a less obvious entry point allowing the water to get into your attic space.
Ice Dams – A roof leak can also happen with water getting in by an ice dam. Ice dams can be formed by the thawing of snow over the warm portions of the roof and refreeze over a cold eave. This can cause water to back up under the shingles. If you don’t have an ice and water underlayment under your shingles, you could have leaks.
Damaged, Missing or Cracked Shingles – A roof leak can start out small and slowly cause serious damage to your home if you ignore the warning signs. If you have missing, cracked or damaged shingles, water can begin to leak into the home.
